The area around this square and Bergmannstrasse is characterized by numerous cafés, restaurants and small shops, particularly antique shops. As one of the last market halls in Berlin, Marheinekehalleprovides a stylish centre of attraction. During the Second World War, the Wilhelminianstyle buildings (19th century) around Bergmannstrasse suffered only minor damage and remain intact for the most part.
Every June since 1994, the west end of Bergmannstrasse hosts the annual street fair, Kreuzberg jazzt!. With more than fifty bands on three music stages, this event constitutes one of the largest jazz events in Berlin.
